Smith’s Poly-FLEX — Semi-Rigid Resurfacing Compound

5936 https://substratetechnology.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Poly-FLEX-flyer-v2-1-768x1024.jpg

Smith’s Poly-FLEX is a 2-component, 100% solids, moisture-tolerant polyurethane resurfacing compound — a flowable, self-smoothing base layer that levels a floor and gives your finish system something solid to build on. It’s flexible enough to keep minor cracks from telegraphing through your finished floor, yet rigid enough for traditional applications. And because it’s moisture tolerant, it works on slabs where other systems can’t.

Key Features

  • Accepts vinyl chip broadcasts directly into the wet film
  • Moisture tolerant — withstands up to 15 lbs (ASTM F1869) and 90% in-situ RH (ASTM F2170)
  • Suppresses minor cracks from telegraphing through to the surface
  • Flowable and self-smoothing — levels itself for a smooth base
  • 100% solids — no solvents, no water, zero VOC, low odor
  • High build — applies from 30 mils up to 5 inches neat
  • Fast — walkable in ~4 hours to accept the next layer; heavy forklift traffic after an overnight cure
  • Freeze/thaw stable — interior or exterior
  • Suitable over radiant in-floor heat systems
  • Tenacious bond — concrete fails before the bond does (ASTM D4541)
  • Strong — 14,010 psi compressive strength; stronger than typical epoxy mortar systems

What It’s For

Poly-FLEX is the base layer under your finish system:

  • Base for broadcast systems — quartz, vinyl chip, rubber/EPDM granules
  • Base for overlays — CPR cementitious polyurethanes, 4 in 1 Overlay, epoxy mortar and slurry systems
  • Base for decorative — Metallic & Luster systems
  • Resurfacing — level and smooth a worn or uneven floor before finishing

Bonds to a Wide Range of Substrates

  • Concrete and polymer-modified overlays
  • Ceramic, porcelain, stone, and quarry tile
  • Existing coatings — cementitious urethane, epoxy, MMA, polyaspartic, polyurethane
  • Terrazzo
  • Metal floors — stainless, iron, steel, copper, treated aluminum
  • Wood subfloors — underlayment-grade plywood or OSB

The Moisture Advantage

Most resinous systems fail when the slab holds moisture. Poly-FLEX is moisture tolerant — rated to 90% in-situ RH — so it can go down on slabs that would defeat other products. That makes it a real problem-solver on jobs where moisture is an issue but you still need a finished floor. (Always test first — see our Tramex moisture meters.)

Important to Know

  • Needs a topcoat — Poly-FLEX is a base layer, not a finished wear surface. Top it with a Smith’s finish system
  • Not UV stable — will dull or chalk with UV exposure (hence the topcoat)
  • Not waterproofing — flexible, but not elastomeric; not a deck membrane
  • Requires CSP 3–6 mechanical prep (diamond grinding, shot blasting, or scarifying)
  • Moisture and pH testing highly recommended before application
  • A demanding professional product — call us and we’ll help you plan the full system

Frequently Asked Questions

What is it? A moisture-tolerant, 100% solids polyurethane resurfacing compound used as a base layer under a finish floor system.

Why “FLEX”? It has enough elongation (30%) to keep minor cracks from telegraphing through to your finished surface.

How moisture tolerant is it? Up to 15 lbs (ASTM F1869) and 90% in-situ RH (ASTM F2170).

Can I walk on it as a finished floor? No — it needs a topcoat or finish system; it’s not a wear surface.

How thick can it go? From 30 mils up to 5 inches neat.
