How much should my resin diamond pads be costing me?

Between $.024 – $.04 USD per SF ($.26 – $.43 USD per M2).

The range of pricing is going to be determined by which “resins” you are referring to. Two types of pads are used in the industry: hybrid and polishing.

  • Hybrid Tools are for transitioning from a metal scratch
  • Polishing Tools are for removing scratches made by hybrid and producing the high polish

Hybrid Tools

Hybrid Tools are usually made of compounds that cut a bit more like a metal tool but leave a smoother scratch pattern. You can tell a hybrid apart from a polishing pad because they are generally 6-8mm (1/4″-3/8″) in thickness, rigid, and have grits of 50 to 200. A good quality hybrid comparable to what Substrate Technology Inc. makes will yield 15,000-20,000 SF (1,400-1850 M2).

Doing fast math, this is what it will cost you:
15,000 SF X $.024 = $360 ”“ if you are running a 12 tool machine (most common quantity per set), the cost would equal $30/tool. You can calculate the various combinations of life and cost but the benchmark for a fair price is a life range of 15,000-20,000 SF and +/-$30 per tool.

Polishing Tools

Polishing Tools are usually made of compounds that are more resin than diamond and have a plastic-like appearance. You can tell a polishing pad apart from a hybrid because they are generally 2-4mm (3/32″-3/16″) in thickness, semi-flexible and have grits of 50 to 5000. A good quality polishing pad like Substrate Technology Inc. makes will yield 10,000-15,000 SF (930-1400 M2).

Doing fast math, this is what it will cost you:
10,000 SF X $.03 = $300 ”“ if you are running a 12 tool machine (most common quantity per set), the cost would equal $25/tool. You can calculate the various combinations of life and cost but the benchmark for a fair price is a range of 10,000-15,000 SF and +/-$25 per tool.

The above may seem a bit more complex than you were expecting for an answer. It is not really necessary for you to understand all the variations of life/cost analysis, but it is very necessary you use a diamond supplier like Substrate Technology Inc. who considers these calculations whenever a “resin” is recommended.

For any clarification of the above or to discuss your unique situation, please do not hesitate to contact Substrate Technology Inc. or any of its authorized dealers for more help and advice. We are all here to supply solutions that save you time and make you money.
