Is it better to use water for polishing?

YES! It is better to use water to polish concrete ”“ for a number of reasons:

1. Using water lubricates the cutting surface and reduces friction & heat of the diamond pads. Less heat allows a more thorough and consistent scratch. It also means that previous scratches can be removed more quickly and completely than if done dry.

2. Cutting wet creates a savings in time and labor. Because the tools can cut more consistently, they are able to do a more thorough processing of the surface, which means less steps when done wet. Less steps means less time, and ultimately, less money for labor.

3. Tools that are specified as wet will usually last longer wet than if run dry. Because the water reduces friction and acts as a lubricant, it increases the life of the polishing abrasives, particularly the resin-bonded pads, which can melt at high temperatures.

4. Wet polishing eliminates any grinding dust, turning it into slurry. Dust elimination especially during the grinding steps means the air has less fine dust particles that could be inhaled. One disadvantage of the wet process is the mess which slows productivity; however, slurry solidification products are available that help reduce that time in cleaning up.*

The Biggest Mistake People Make

The most important point for consideration of a wet or dry process is verifying with your manufacturer EXACTLY how the tools are to be run. If they are specified to be run wet, then run them wet. If dry, then run them dry.

The biggest mistake people make using diamond tools is using them in a way not specified by the manufacturer. Ultimately, the tools lose their intended performance and their lifespan is much less than expected. This results in wasted labor, time, and money and is a disappointment for all involved.
